Philip Battell Stewart was born in Middlebury, Vt., son of John Wolcott and Emma (Battell) Stewart; graduated from Yale University in 1886; studied law at Yale; moved to Washington State and then to Colorado in the late 1890s where he worked with mining companies and public utilities for many years.
